There are many students and amateur artists who are pursuing sculpture art. What is required to become a good sculpture? Sculpture making is not that easy. There are moments when the clay that you have molded will break and you will have to start all over again. Hence as a beginner you need to have patience to learn this art. This is the list of requirements that one will need before you start to learn the art. Plaster of Paris (POP), small, a plastic carton about half filled with cold water (cartons that are usually used for milk), a paint stirring stick that is easily available in the market (try to get one that has holes in it) a spoon, plaster powder, bowl. Here is what you should do: Add teaspoons of plaster powder to the water in the carton and sift it evenly. Continue with this process until there is a heap that rises in the middle. Then add a few sprinkles with a teaspoon around the sides. Stir the mixture slowly with the stick without lifting it from the carton. The idea behind doing this is to keep as many air bubbles out as possible. With the stick that has holes in it, you can check the stick several times to see if any lumps appear at the end of it. You can stop stirring when the stick shows that the mixture is only like a smooth batter. Now with the help of the stick you can squash the container on the outside from the bottom upward so as to release all kinds of air bubbles that may have formed during the process.
Once all the air bubbles are out, you can set the container aside to harden. Now what happens is that this material cannot sustain on its own. The concrete is not easy to handle directly. To control the shape, it usually needs some kind of form or structure. You can caste it into a form and then remove the form or professional artists get a solid block carved which can be then removed. Any medium requires one to be observant and patient so that you can learn effectively. Sculpture artists also develop this skill over a period of time. After you know enough about the medium, you can experiment with the shapes and the form and even paint your sculptures! Sculpture art is very well developed in India. So do use this medium and enjoy this fascinating journey of art and creativity!
