It is said that it was the kings who actually could afford to collect coins as a pastime. But, then that was in the ancient world. It is believed that coin collections became a hobby for even the common man somewhere in the 14th century. The Italian poet and scholar, Petrarch, is said to have initiated the modern world coin collecting hobby amongst people.
However, the first ever international convention that was organized for those into collecting coins was held between 15th and 18th August 1962, in Detroit (Michigan). This event was sponsored by the American Numismatic Association in collaboration with the Canadian Numismatic Association. It is said that there were approximately 40,000 visitors at this convention.
